Hello everyone. We have discussed about how some algorithms let us to achieve a pareto optimal when market is not allowed to allocate resources. But now, let talk about how the theory actually works in real life. Recently, I knew about the work that the Nobel prize Alvin Roth has made in Mexico, in specific, in PRO-RENAL A.C.
We can read from its official webpage: “The Paired Renal Donation uses a technological algorithm designed by Dr. Alvin Roth, thanks to which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2012. This sophisticated matching algorithm works by a computerized system that records the genetic information of patients a transplant with that of voluntary donors. Once the information is entered in the system, the algorithm allows to identify how compatible with donor genetics with that of patient recipients, even among unknown, unrelated individuals located in different geographic locations. In this way, the compatibility of recipient / donor pairs, a fin of which medical treatment can perform the required transplant, is precisely determined.
The Paired Renal Donation has been successfully performed for several years in different countries around the world. In 2016 alone, more than 3,100 pairs of donors / recipients are registered in the United States, resulting in a large number of transplants. The larger the information that our system has, the greater the chances of finding pairs of donors …The Paired Renal Donation, also called Crossed Kidney Donation, is a procedure that is carried out in more than 10 countries of the world… The first transplants of this type were performed from 2009, however, it is up to now, thanks to Dr. Roth’s “Compatibility Algorithm”, that it is possible to accurately identify the compatibility between receptor / donor pairs …Although, on some occasions, the identification of compatibility is configured as a simple cross between two pairs, where Donor 1 (D1) coincides with Recipient 2 (R2) and Donor 2, with Recipient 1, in some examples, the end result may be manifested in the formation of a large chain of multi-donor donors…” I invite you to check the webpage and to share more applications used in the the reality that makes this a better world. I think this is a great motivation about how we, as economists, can make an impact in the life of many people.
