Adam Smith explains that the best economic benefit for all is accomplish when individuals act in their own self interest. Self interest and competition are the largest motivator in economic activity. as he described in his book “The wealth of nations”:
“ It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.”
This self interest can lead to overall economic well being, that could be a moral point to the market because no other system is more efficient in creating wealth and satisfying needs of consumers. Even though markets could get to moral outcomes it`s clear for me that market don’t care about morals.
You just have to open your fridge and think that the meat you will eat tomorrow probably come from ilegal cattle that destroy a vast territory in the amazonas, that would make you a supporter and funder of global warming and animal cruelty besides that the hamburger you will prepare with that meat is going to be delicious. Anyway I know that you know what your doing, and even so you will keep doing it. Even though i don´t eat meat, i`m also a supporter of this predator system that causes so much suffer and pain to people i would never know, because im writing this in a beautiful computer that probably pushes a good man, probably Chinese, with a lovely wife and beautiful kids to commit suicide. But i love this computer, Netflix just looks so fine in this retina display.
And it seems that i can’t escape of this cruel system, so the way i keep supporting it with out feeling guilty is to lie myself and hoping that the products i buy are the result of a well paid work.
Markets don`t care about morals, thats why we have to make institutions that establish conditions that prevent markets from destroying the ecosystem and force people to commit suicide.
